What is skirting board?

Skirting board is one of the change-off materials.

Change-off material is pointed to be, a decorative partial material which is constructed to connect an edge of floor, wall and another finishing materials, or to connect an edge and another edge.

Besides skirting board, there are various partial change-off materials.

Change-off material is a kind of partial material of wall and floor touching part, namely a partial material attached to the lower part of wall. There are various roles and usages, and there are abundant kinds too.

 

The roles of skirting board

・Defending from dusts invading.

・Having a role of cushioning material, and in earthquakes or so, it will decrease damages of bearing the wall and floor.

・As to others, defending from sound, heat and others going off.

・In order to hurt the wall carelessly.

 

At the wall material and floor material touching place, we usually open a gap on purpose.

Due to divergency of earthquake, aging deterioration, and so on, the wall and floor force works in the different direction.

As the result, they are made to be unreceiving damage individually.

And while sealing the gap, what is playing a role of cushioning material is skirting board.

If a gap is being opened, sound and heat may leak from there, so the heat insulating performance of the room may go down.

 

When using vacuum cleaner, have you ever collide with the wall with thud sound?

In that case, in order to secure the wall material too, skirting board is attached there.

When pulling a chair at the wall, chances are that it can make a cushioning role.

 

The kinds of skirting board

There are three kinds of skirting boardd.

・Overhung skirting board

・Inserted skirting board

・Same surface skirting board

 

Overhung skirting board

It is the most general skirting board. It has a shape of protecting as if covering lower part of the wall.

Furthermore, as for Overhung skerting board material,

・Soft type skirting board

・Wooden skirting board

are often used.

Soft type skirting board is just like vinyl resin made tape. As it can reduce and minimize the cost, it is used for most of the usual office.

As the name suggests, wooden skirting board is made of wood.

It is a skirting board with some thickness which are being used in many general housing.

By making it as same as similar color with the wall cloth, it can be refreshed.

However, if the floor is flooring or wood pattern cushion floor, it is often constructed by the color as similar as the floor.

Inserted skirting board

 

It is a skirting board to opening a gap between wall and floor, then to install skirting board by inserting it in order to make it thinner than the wall.

As there is not overhung part, there are merits such as dust is not easy to be gathered and so on. However, there are demerits such as its strength goes down, and its cost goes up.

Probably, to choose its looking neat feeling, or to choose its strength, you may wonder which to choose.

Same surface skirting board

It is a skirting board put in with the same surface wall. Compared with overhung skirting board, same as inserted skirting board, it will look neat.
