On gypsum board thickness

 

In the first place, gypsum board has very many kinds.

 

All of their basic feature is the same. However, depending on the types, thickness standard varies such as enhanced waterproof property, enhanced more durability than usual type and so on.

 

For example, the most general gypsum board (all-purpose board, also called GB-R (abbreviation of Gypsum Board Regular) has the following thickness standard types:

・9.5mm

・12.5mm

・15mm(order production only, as it is not often used)

The most general type is 12.5mm thick. Chances are that only 9.5mm thick type should be used for a certain construction work place too, or it is used for double layer board sticking too.

 

Incidentally, as for this all-purpose type gypsum board, non-combustibility authorization differs according to its thickness. 9.5mm thick type is pseudo-incombustible, 12.5mm and 15mm types are authorized as incombustible material.

As to the concept of incombustibility and pseudo-incombustibility, we will not further write about it in detail. However, as its essence, if you understand that it is the difference of「the time interval from the material starts burning to fireproof performance is gone」, then it seems to be all right.

 

Flame resistant＜pseudo-incombustible＜incombustible, fireproof performance is thus going up(Incombustible is the best performance).

 

However, this is the case of all-purpose type gypsum board. There are some 9.5mm thick type gypsum board which is also authorized as incombustible.

You cannot freely change to choose the thickness. However, according to the required thickness type, the suitable board material is going to be selected.

 

In the end, the gypsum board of 12.5mm thick type is most used. For double layer sticking or so, 9.5mm thick type is used. Where strength is particularly required, called「reinforced gypsum board」glass fiber is contained in the board core material and thicker 15mm, 21mm thick type, or the thickest 25mm thick type is used.

 

Thicker the gypsum board is, its weight is notably heavier. As where executed construction work is necessary to tie rigidly and the cost also goes up, it is not always possible to use thicker type anyhow.

On gypsum board length(size) standard

 

Piled up gypsum board situation. As general size is 910mm×1820mm, it is called 「SABUROKU board」 in Japanese size.

 

Same as gypsum board thickness, there are various standard sizes too.

The most general size is 910mm×1820mm.

 

Incidentally, besides gypsum board, this 910mm×1820mm size is used for control panel, plywood board and other board materials too. Some old houses may also have the same standard. So this size can also be said a familiar standard in Japan.

 

12.5mm thick gypsum board has other length×width size such as 910mm×2730mm. As this is vertically long, if the size matches, it can be executed construction work from the floor to the ceiling with only one board or so, which makes better workability.

 

Besides, at the fire resisting division and the like, a kind of board called enforced gypsum board which contains glass fiber inside, enhancing fireproof performance is often used.

It is made rather thick to enhance durability, so there are the thickness of 12.5mm, 15mm, and 21mm. 21 mm thick type is rather heavy. In order to handle it easily, the size are 606mm×1820mm and 606mm×2730mm.

 

In the case of decorative gypsum board

Decorative gypsum board is, making gypsum board cover decorative finishing and without painting or sticking so-called decorative cloth or so, it is a kind of gypsum board which is expected neat finishing.

 

The thickness is all unified as 9.5mm. There are 455mm×910mm rectangular type and 910mm×910mm square type.

 

Decorative gypsum board is different from regular gypsum board. As paint finishing or sticking so-called decorative cloth is not carried out, we go on executing construction work so that finishing and board fitting are done as much well as possible. (Rarely, decorative gypsum board use exclusive painting is sometimes applied.)

There may not be often chances of seeing it than control panel or plywood board in general.

However, gypsum board has various thickness and size standard. As its sound insulating property and incombustibility are also high, we can say that it is the most used board material now.

・Gypsum board has various kinds including all-purpose gypsum board. Depending on its kinds, there exists plural thickness and size standard.

・A thin type is 9.5mm thick, and a thick type is 25mm thick (In the case of enforced gypsum board) and so on, there are various thickness types.

・Basically, the thicker it is, incombustible property is the better. There is a different standard incombustibility enforced thin type too.

 

As gypsum board is different from plywood, it is almost all used for interior decorative bedding material.

Therefore, we usually do not see it often, and feel that there is little chances to select it by oneself too.
